The Ontario Ministry of Transportation plans several weekend lane closures on the Burlington Skyway Bridge this summer for rehabilitation work, but has not responded to key requests from Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward regarding local traffic impacts. In a letter dated May 28, the mayor outlined how a recent two-lane closure during Mother’s Day weekend led to severe congestion across Burlington, including blocked residential streets and gridlocked major corridors.
While the ministry confirmed efforts to improve public communication — including portable message signs, overhead displays, website alerts, and social media updates — it has not addressed Meed Ward’s requests to release a full public list of closure dates, add signage at key on-ramps, and deploy police traffic patrols during the closures. She stressed that the current communication approach lacks transparency and leaves residents unprepared.
The ministry stated the construction involves asphalt and waterproofing replacement and concrete repairs on Niagara-bound lanes, with two lanes remaining open during closures. No specific dates have been released for the upcoming work, which is expected to occur on six weekends between late May and Labour Day.
