When I planned a weekend getaway to Vaughan, I anticipated a few roller coasters and perhaps some shopping. What I didn't expect was a city brimming with artistic treasures, natural beauty, and diverse culinary experiences. Just a short drive from Toronto, Vaughan offers a delightful mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation.
Morning: A Serene Start at Kortright Centre for Conservation
I began my day at the Kortright Centre for Conservation, a tranquil oasis spanning 325 hectares of pristine woodlands. The 16 km of trails offered a peaceful hike, with the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves as my soundtrack. The Earth Rangers Centre on-site provided insightful exhibits on sustainable living, making it both an educational and rejuvenating experience.
Midday: Artistic Exploration at McMichael Canadian Art Collection
Next, I ventured to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in the charming village of Kleinburg. This gallery is a haven for Canadian art enthusiasts, housing nearly 6,000 works by artists like Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, and Indigenous creators. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered stunning views of the surrounding Humber River Valley, seamlessly blending art and nature.
Afternoon: Retail Therapy at Vaughan Mills
No trip to Vaughan is complete without a visit to Vaughan Mills. This expansive shopping centre boasts a mix of high-end retailers, outlet stores, and unique attractions. I indulged in some retail therapy at Aritzia and Sephora, then took a playful detour to the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, where the child in me marveled at intricate LEGO creations.
Evening: Culinary Delights at Mama Fatma Turkish Cuisine
For dinner, I dined at Mama Fatma Turkish Cuisine, a gem that transported my taste buds straight to Istanbul. The lamb shish kebab was tender and flavorful, complemented by freshly baked pide and a refreshing ayran. The warm ambiance and attentive service made it a memorable dining experience.
Nightcap: Entertainment at Dave & Buster's
To cap off the evening, I headed to Dave & Buster's for some lighthearted fun. Between rounds of arcade games and sips of a well-crafted Long Island Iced Tea, I reveled in the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect blend of nostalgia and modern entertainment.
Bonus: Family Fun at Reptilia Zoo
If you're traveling with family, don't miss Reptilia Zoo. This indoor reptile zoo houses over 250 species, including a 14-foot Nile crocodile named Induna. The interactive exhibits and educational programs make it a hit for visitors of all ages.
Vaughan seamlessly combines urban excitement with natural tranquility. Whether you're seeking artistic inspiration, thrilling adventures, or culinary delights, this city delivers. It's a destination that caters to diverse interests, ensuring every traveler leaves with cherished memories.
