Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward has taken the city’s Buy Canadian response to potential United States tariffs a step further.

Nine days after city council called on federal and provincial governments to remove restrictions on municipalities preferring Canadian companies for capital projects and supplies if tariffs are imposed, Meed Ward announced a local tariff task force and issued a mayoral decision directing staff to report on possible local responses.

Under provincial strong-mayor legislation, Meed Ward asked Burlington’s chief financial officer to prepare a report for the March 3 meeting of the committee of the whole, outlining “ways the city could, where possible, prioritize Canadian vendors and suppliers in the event new tariffs are imposed on Canadian exports to the United States.”
