The vibes were high at Rogers Centre over the Canada Day week as the Toronto Blue Jays pulled off a clean four-game sweep over the New York Yankees from July 1–3. With the series win, the Jays vaulted into first place in the AL East—sending a message to the league and flipping the division race on its head.
Each game brought its own fireworks, but the final matchup sealed the sweep with an 8–5 win and a serious power display from George Springer.
Springer Stays Hot
George Springer had himself a week. The veteran outfielder homered twice in the series finale—both two-run shots—capping off a four-home-run series that saw him drive in eight total runs. It wasn’t just the long ball either—Springer’s clutch timing and plate discipline set the tone all series.
Bassitt Brings the Heat
Chris Bassitt took the mound for the Jays in the final game and delivered a strong 5⅔ innings, striking out nine and holding the Yankees to minimal damage. It was his eighth win of the season and a performance that calmed things down after early offense from New York. Jeff Hoffman came in late to lock up the save—his 21st of the season—and the crowd roared as the sweep became official.
Yankees’ Slide Continues
New York came into the series with a narrow lead in the division, but Toronto’s bats—and their bullpen—had other plans. Clarke Schmidt started Game 4 for the Yankees but exited early with forearm tightness, compounding a rough stretch for a team now battling injuries and inconsistency. After losing 14 of their last 20, the Yankees find themselves in unfamiliar territory: chasing.
What It Means for the Division
With the sweep, the Blue Jays now sit alone atop the AL East standings. It’s a major shift midway through the season, especially given the Yankees’ early dominance. For Toronto fans, it’s a welcome surge of momentum—and a reminder that this roster has the firepower and depth to make a serious postseason push.
Next up: the Jays look to keep the heat on in a weekend series that could solidify their lead. For New York, it’s regroup time as they prepare for the upcoming Subway Series.
