Vegas just landed a jackpot — and his name is Mitch Marner.
In a blockbuster move that’s sending shockwaves through the NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Mitch Marner is officially headed to the Vegas Golden Knights. The sign-and-trade deal makes Vegas even more stacked, and Marner couldn’t be more excited to join the franchise that’s built its identity on family, winning, and culture.
“I didn’t want to miss this opportunity,” Marner said during his unveiling. “This team knows how to win — and I want to be a part of that.”
It’s easy to see why Vegas was top of mind. With names like Mark Stone, Jack Eichel, William Karlsson, Shea Theodore, and Adin Hill already on the roster, the 2023 Stanley Cup champions are built to compete. Add in one of the league’s best playmakers — a two-time All-Star with 741 career points — and the desert just got a whole lot hotter.
Let’s not forget: Marner’s 521 assists since his rookie season rank fifth in the entire NHL, and his 741 points put him eighth. In short, Vegas didn’t just get a good player — they got an elite one.
Behind the scenes, things shifted quickly. When veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was forced to step away due to a serious hip injury, it opened up crucial cap space. From there, Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon zeroed in on Marner. “He was the player we wanted,” McCrimmon said. “Elite playmaker, tremendous passer — our fans are going to love this guy.”
And it’s not just about stats. The lifestyle, the locker room vibe, and the energy of Vegas made it an easy choice for Marner and his growing family. After talking to former players like Max Pacioretty and Ryan Reaves, he and his wife Stephanie felt confident that Vegas was the perfect fit for them and their three-month-old son Miles.
Of course, an eight-year, $96 million contract helps make that decision even sweeter.
With free agency looming, both sides knew time was ticking. But the stars aligned, and before July 1 hit, the deal was done.
Mitch Marner is officially a Golden Knight — and Vegas is once again the center of the hockey universe.
